The Historic Barrio District is a Mecca of Art, Culture, History, and Activism that promotes community pride, economic opportunities, and a healthy environment with ample access to resources. It is a unified community where all residents are engaged, connected, and valued.
The Mission of Historic Barrio District CDC is to build and nurture a unified, thriving community where residents plan and control their lives and neighborhoods.
We commit to amplifying the voice of our residents as they protect and preserve the integrity of our community.
We encourage positive change in our community while celebrating and respecting the rich culture, history and traditions of our neighborhoods.
In our work we strive to promote inclusiveness, collaboration, respect and dignity.
We uphold the values of social, economic, and environmental justice, which lead to a high quality of life and self determination for our residents.
We advocate for all people’s right to the highest and best education, health and built environment.
We embody community pride and activism.
And we commit to being mindful of the potential outcomes of our actions.
In 1984, the Sherman Action Committee incorporated itself as the Sherman Heights Community Center Corporation (SHCCC). Its first step and top priority in rebuilding the community was the creation of a community center.
In 1994, the Sherman Heights Community Center opened its doors and became a place for people of all ages to celebrate the joys of life in the heart of their own communities.
In 2011, the SHCCC created the Historic Barrio District CDC to help meet needs in neighboring communities, and expanded their service area to include not only Sherman Heights but also the neighborhoods of Logan Heights, Grant Hill, Memorial and Stockton.
Today we continue our commitment to respond to educational, cultural, and developmental needs. We have been successful at establishing a great deal of local support for our programs. From resident participation to local sponsorships of events and programs, we have created and maintained strong working relationships with individuals, agencies and businesses from the Historic Barrio District. We have created numerous collaborations between local schools, businesses, volunteers and agencies that have resulted in enhanced programs and services for our population. Through our collaborative efforts, we have provided after-school programs, health and nutrition classes and services, and more.
